Astral Plane (T) and Material World (B)
Custom cotton fabric, linen, polyester thread, hand quilting
2020

Material World and Astral Plane are hand-quilted and sewn textile works made with fabrics printed from my own photos of the landscape near Alamogordo NM, and a NASA image of sunrise from space. This imagery references the tension between what we understand with our bodies alone and what we can see and know through technology and other disembodied experiences. The quilt pattern, Tumbling Blocks, uses a familiar optical illusion found in decorative spaces ranging from ancient Greek tile patterns to early video games. This is a point of entry for considering how relationships to “natural” spaces intersect with parts of identity, technological and scientific advancement and spiritual practices.
