Portfolio > Legacies

Legacies is a series of needlepoints that explore various geometric shapes, motifs and patterns that persist in visual culture across time and media. I started by searching through early American quilt and cross stitch patterns for imagery that also appears in other popular forms of media, especially video games. For example, in Maid’s Arrow the background is derived from the quilt pattern, Tumbling Blocks, which uses a familiar optical illusion found in ancient Greek tiles and as an isometric graphic in the early 80’s arcade game Q*bert. Stepping Stones, Starlit Diamond and Diamond Echo use color, value and pointillism to create illusionistic depth, which can be found in the 8-bit version of video games like Super Mario Brothers and Zelda.
